Do Not Read Unless You’re Over 40

Now then…

I want to tell you what happened to me the other day…

I bought an exercise dvd because I’m tired of being tired. I want
to get into shape, I want to fit into my clothes, and I want
energy - LOTS of it!

So I put on my old sweats, put on the dvd, and here was this
barely 20 something girl in the shape of a toothpick, grinning
menacingly (I swear!) at the camera like she was going to take a
bite out it. Or me.

“Don’t worry,” she says. “We’re going to start out sloooowwww.”

Grin grin grin.

Barely five minutes into her jumping/gyrating/vibrating routine,
I collapsed on the couch, completely confused, frustrated and
ANNOYED.

Maybe, just maybe I could have kept up with her for awhile if
something she did made SENSE.

But just when I was able to copy one of her moves, she was on to
the next one like a frenzied rabid rabbit.

“Okay,” she grins, “Put your right arm up and step with your left

What Kind of a Dumb Name is That??

A few days ago I wrote to you about Fit Yummy Mummy, the program that

Q. “What kind of a dumb name is that, anyway??”

A. Ah yes, a rose by any other name…

It’s surprising how often readers write in simply to ask me about
the name of a program.

In this case, I think it’s perfect.

“Fit” is what every Mom wants to be. Who wants to be the frumpy
dumpy looking Mom at the playground, daycare or school? Don’t we

“Yummy” refers to the meals. Now, you could of course just do the
exercises and still eat whatever you want. You’ll get results,
just not the same results someone gets who does the exercises AND

“Mummy” needs no explanation, right? We’re all Mummies or Daddies
in the early years, especially when we’re practicing that foreign

If cardio doesn’t work, why have I been told for years (decades!)
to do it???

Great question.

Frankly, people, including the experts, just didn’t know any
better.

If you have something good (which exercise is) it just seems
logical that doing more of it is even better.

But the fact is, hours of cardio each week, and even traditional
strength training, will only get you so far.

If you bake a pizza at 200 degrees, after a long time it’ll be
done. But it won’t look as good, and may not even taste as good
as it would have if you had baked it at 400 or 450.

At the higher temperatures your pizza could be done in 8 to 12
minutes (if not frozen) In that time the crust will become
golden, the cheese will melt and brown, and the flavors will be
superb.

At 200 degrees, the crust will probably never brown, and instead
turn tough and chewy. The cheese will look like you left it on
your dashboard on a hot summer day. and the flavor… after
baking for such a long time, there probably won’t be much flavor
to speak of.

Now, I probably shouldn’t be talking about pizza to people who
want to lose weight (me included.)

But it’s a good analogy.

If you work out a little bit for a long time (like an hour of
treadmill walking) you’ll get exercise.

You’ll even get into better shape.

But you won’t get into as good of shape as someone who uses
resistance training to fatigue for short bursts of time (I’m
oversimplifying, but you get the idea.)

Sometimes shorter is better. And fifteen minutes of the RIGHT
kind of exercising done the right way will do more to make you
fit and lose weight than an hour or two of traditional boring
cardio.

In fact, cutting your workout time and frequency in half or less
